The Citizenship and Naturalization Practice

If you are a foreign national and want to become an American citizen, you must be a lawful permanent resident (formerly known as a green card holder) for 5 years before you can seek citizenship through the naturalization process. You can also seek naturalization if you are the spouse of a U.S. citizen and have 3 years of permanent residency, or have qualifying service in the U.S. military and meet all other residency requirements.

In addition, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have been an LPR for at least 5 years immediately preceding your application for citizenship.
  • Have lived within the state for at least three months prior to the filing of your application
  • Have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the five year period preceding your application
  • Be able to read, write and speak English and have proficiency in U.S. history and government
  • Be a person of good moral character
  • Live continuously in American from the date of application for citizenship until the time of naturalization

Your child may qualify for naturalization under certain circumstances. If you are an American citizen and have a child who was born outside of the United States and is currently living outside of the United States, you may seek citizenship for that child if all other eligibility requirements are met.

Our attorneys will help you determine whether you qualify to naturalize. If so, we can direct you to the appropriate study materials to prepare you for the naturalization test. We will also help you prepare and file the necessary documentation to seek citizenship.

United States Passports Books and Passport Cards

We can assist you with obtaining a United States Passport book or card for travel abroad. Passport cards can be used for land travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Passport cards cannot be used to travel abroad by air; international air travel requires use of a passport book.
